At the heart of the ISU-556 is FM Products’ monolithic one-piece barrel, which integrates:
- The barrel
- The gas block
- The barrel extension
The barrel features a thermally fit, heavy-duty AR-10–sized barrel extension, paired with an AR-10–sized bolt head, delivering strength well beyond traditional AR-15 designs. The barrel itself is thermally fit into the upper receive, creating an exceptionally rigid interface that enhances durability, consistency, and accuracy.
10.5″ Carbine Performance — Without the Punishment
Although the ISU-556 uses a 16.2″ barrel, its gas system is tuned to match the dwell time of a 10.5″ carbine. This allows the system to maintain reliable function while eliminating the harsh recoil and accelerated wear typically associated with short-gas, suppressed ARs. The final 5.7 inches of the barrel—contained within the suppressor—feature over 100 precision-drilled gas ports that intersect directly with the lands of the rifling. This monumental manufacturing challenge allows gas to be bled off progressively and symmetrically, reducing pressure before it can spike. To further optimize suppressed performance, the ISU-556 uses a modular gas port that is .015″ smaller than a standard 10.5″ carbine gas port, dramatically reducing back pressure, recoil, and component wear.
Flow-Through, Low Back Pressure Suppression
The ISU-556 suppressor is a true flow-through design, built around a 1.5″ seamless 316 stainless steel outer tube wrapped in high-temperature silicone to protect the shooter’s hands during extended firing.
As gases exit the barrel, they:
- Enter a large expansion chamber
- Navigate a complex internal labyrinth
- Pass through a precision-machined 17-4 stainless baffle stack
- Exit through metered orifices in a flash-suppressor-style end cap
Some gases are allowed to re-enter the barrel ports and exit through the muzzle, while others vent forward—maintaining low system pressure and excellent suppression for a 5.56 platform. Built-In Safety and Durability Because the suppressor baffles are installed externally around the one-piece barrel, there is no possible path for a baffle strike. The baffles seat against a conical 17-7
high-temperature spring, which:
- Maintains preload and alignment
- Creates additional convoluted gas pathways
- Promotes cooling before gases reach the rear expansion chamber
- Labyrinth seals at both the barrel and end caps ensure zero gas leakage and long-term
durability under sustained fire.
Accuracy Without Compromise
Intersecting gas ports with the lands of the rifling—rather than the grooves—preserves projectile stability while venting gas. This design choice, rarely attempted due to its manufacturing complexity, reflects FM Products’ commitment to suppressed accuracy, not just sound reduction. With muzzle velocities exceeding 2,700 FPS, the ISU-556 delivers the performance shooters expect from a full-length 5.56 rifle—quietly and controllably.
