Traditional 9mm AR platforms rely on blowback or delayed blowback systems that require heavy bolts and buffers to manage the violent pressure spike created as the projectile traps expanding gases in the bore. That mass works—but at the cost of recoil, wear, and shootability. The ISU-9 has far fewer parts and is dramatically simpler than a complex delayed blow back system that required a greater level of maintenance to achieve the same reliability of a traditional blow back system.
The ISU-9 operates differently. As the projectile travels down the barrel, it passes over precision-drilled gas ports that are intersected directly with the lands of the rifling—a manufacturing and engineering first in the 9mm integrally suppressed space. These ports bleed off expanding gases before pressure can spike to traditional blowback levels.
Those gases are:
- Routed through a convoluted internal labyrinth
- Expanded into the large internal chamber formed by the ISU-9’s ultra-slim outer tube
- Directed through an integrated baffle stack
- Engineered to meter the expanding gasses out through the flash suppressor end cap
