Blade Tips introduces the Espina, a minimalist utility knife inspired by improvised prison knives. Featuring a precision-machined design, the Espina ensures a secure grip and replaceable blade while maintaining a compact profile. Its exposed blade serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, embodying the fusion of art and utility in everyday carry.
The Espina began with photographs of improvised knives made by prisoners from penitentiary-issued disposable toothbrushes — commonly referred to inside the penitentiary as “Tomahawks.” These tools were made from almost nothing, yet remained remarkably functional. The ingenuity behind those designs became the starting point for a completely different kind of utility knife.
Espina — Spanish for thorn — takes that minimalist philosophy and turns it into a precision-machined, replaceable-blade platform. Compact, unconventional, and deliberately stripped down, it provides only what is needed to securely hold and control a cutting edge.
Each Espina includes a purpose-built sheath and a blade. Limited drops may feature sterile, marked, or specialty engraved blade options.
