Preferred Barrel Blanks introduces the Speed Freaks chamber design, aimed at enhancing performance for short-action cartridges with modern magazine systems. The project includes testing AICS and MDT magazines to allow longer bullet seating, optimizing pressure-velocity balance. Initial focus will be on .223 Remington and 25 Creedmoor, with ongoing scientific analysis.
Preffered Barrel Blanks state “We’re launching something new at Preferred Barrel Blanks, and I wanted to give you an early look. It’s a new chamber design series we’re calling Speed Freaks — a research-driven project aimed at maximizing performance from short-action cartridges using modern magazine systems that support longer seating depths.
We’ll be testing two categories of performance:
- 2.950″ binderless AICS magazines for cartridges like 25 Creedmoor and 6.5 Creedmoor
- MDT extended-length magazines for cartridges like .223 Rem, 22 ARC, and 6 ARC
By removing traditional COAL restrictions, these cartridges gain meaningful room for long bullets, slower powders, and a more optimal pressure-velocity balance.
Over the next several months, we’ll be publishing articles that follow a scientific-method framework for each cartridge:
- Baseline SAAMI testing
- Predicted gains
- Long-COAL testing using AICS or MDT mags
- Velocity, pressure, ES/SD, and accuracy comparisons
- Finalized “Speed Freak Load Lanes” for every caliber
The first two cartridges in the series will be .223 Remington and 25 Creedmoor, with several more to follow.”
